Overview
What is NetProxy?
is a proxy server and firewall that allows any number of users on your LAN to access the Internet via a gateway PC.
In depth
A closer look at NetProxy
The Internet connection can be a dial-up SLIP or PPP connection, or any type TCP/IP connection. Because most Internet applications use the TCP/IP protocol to talk to the Internet, you must install TCP/IP on each of the machines on your LAN that you wish to provide Internet access to, and give each machine it’s own, unique IP address. The IP addresses you assign do not need to be registered with InterNIC because at no time is any machine on your LAN connected directly to the Internet. The program allows your LAN users to run Internet clients such as Netscape Navigator, WS_FTP, Telnet, Newsreaders, Email clients, and IRC clients by handling the routing of TCP/IP packets between the Internet and your LAN workstations at the application level. It uses the Windows RAS (Remote Access Service) API, which enables it to reliably dial your service provider "on demand" whenever anyone on your LAN tries to connect to the Internet, and to drop the line during periods when nobody is using the Internet, thus ensuring that your on-line time and telephone charges are kept to an absolute minimum. NetProxy makes use of the abilities of Windows 95 and Windows NT to act as a multi-homed host. This means that a PC running Windows 95 or NT can have several IP addresses, one for each interface (an 'interface' can be a PC network card, a dial-up networking adaptor, or an ISDN terminal adaptor).
