The program is designed to replace expensive proprietary hardware routers such as Cisco, Ascend, and Livingston. It supports Ethernet 10Mb/s and 100Mb/s, multi-port MTasync asynchronous cards (up to 16 ports), and the MTsync synchronous card (5Mb/s using a V35 cable).

MikroTik's features include: remote Java box administration capability; the ability to control the bandwidth; and Telnet, console, and serial console administration capabilities.

In addition, the program includes security, system status, and traffic logging capabilities using standard Cisco pairs output, as well as the ability to modify configuration settings in real-time.
