Overview

What is BSD-SYSLOGD?

is a DOS port of SYSLOG, the popular BSD UNIX network information-logging daemon.

In depth

A closer look at BSD-SYSLOGD

Syslogd is a useful part of a comprehensive security policy for a Unix network. Its sole purpose is to receive, from local network hosts (usually via UDP, port 514), packets of information that describe/monitor all types of system access. The program logs this information (to screen, file, or printer) for statistical purposes, and to ensure that you can trace the activities of unauthorized users.

A DOS machine running Syslogd is secure from attack because the machine is only passively logging Syslog entries, offering no other services. However, it is still vulnerable to "denial of service" attacks, e.g. flooding the machine with packets to overflow the log. Therefore, you should set your firewall to block Syslog packets from any machine outside your network. You may also wish to log entries to a printer for an indelible record.
