Overview

What is EarTest?

is an ear-training program designed to improve both perfect pitch and relative pitch ability.

In depth

A closer look at EarTest

The program plays a note and you respond via MIDI keyboard or mouse. You get visual and/or aural feedback, so you know immediately whether your answer is right or wrong. The combination of intuitive response and immediate feedback helps your ear quickly improve and builds your musical reflexes. EarTest provides helpful statistics about your progress that can help you pinpoint which notes you are getting confused.

EarTest can test you on any group of notes in any octave(s), using any sound your MIDI instrument (or soundcard) can produce. It selects notes either randomly or melodically (with the same proportion of large and small intervals as typical musical melodies). You can also weight note selection to concentrate your practice on a few particularly difficult notes, or to make melodies with the right distribution of notes for a particular scale.
