It works by drawing on ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger's (AIM) buddy lists to create groups that can securely share files through Gnutella's file-sharing technology. It also lets you browse and search the larger Gnutella network for files. Unlike Napster, Aimster gives you significantly more control over who can access your shared files and computers, and also lets users share not only music but any personal content.

Aimster can be customized with skins.

Aimster's patent-pending integration technology cannot be blocked or temporarily interrupted by the instant messaging service provider. The software currently doesn't work well behind firewalls.
