A closer look at Reversi

Your fortunes hinge on the turn of a stone in this board game with deceptively simple rules. Will you dominate the board, or will the computer turn the tide? The beauty of this game is that a very simple playing field and rules can lead to a very deep, subtle game. The game is played on a board covered with eight rows and eight columns of squares. You begins with a number of game pieces that are white on one side and black on the other.

Initially, four pieces are placed in the center of the board. You place one of your colored pieces on a square such that it "captures" one or more of your opponent's pieces along a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. All captured pieces are turned, and play continues with alternating turns. If you can't place a piece that results in at least one of your opponent's pieces being captured, then you must pass. The game ends when the board is full of pieces or both players are unable to move. Whichever player has the most pieces visible on the board wins.
