The airplane is flown with the joystick, while the mouse is used to set the throttle, landing gear, radio frequencies, flaps, and other stuff. You never have to touch the keyboard for the entire flight.

X-Plane also supports dynamic speech synthesis, which allows verbal air traffic control communications.
