What is Parsec LAN-Test for Windows?

is a 3D, space combat game which enables you to play against other LAN (Local Area Network) players.

In depth

A closer look at Parsec LAN-Test for Windows

The core of Parsec is a network of game servers, each responsible for a single galaxy comprising several solar systems. All game servers are registered at the central Parsec master server from where you can select a specific game server for playing.

The basic unit of play is a single solar system, but you can easily jump from system to system. There are no game sessions that have to be started explicitly. You can seamlessly join and unjoin a game server at any time. But beware! While you are exploring the universe, every other player can shoot you down to advance their position in the roster of all-time Parsec legends. If you wish also to become a legend, you have to eliminate numerous spaceships yourself, and still prevail to collect the honor.

Game servers (galaxies) have their own dedicated position in the Parsec universe, and are connected to nearby galaxies via stargates. The server transition involved in this jump is handled transparently by the master server and the respective game servers.

There are several ways to enter the Parsec universe. You can always connect directly to a specific game server if you know its IP address or DNS name. You can also access the Web page of the master server which lists all available game servers and simply pick one. Alternatively, you can have the master server resolve star coordinates or solar system names to server addresses. This name resolution is performed automatically each time that you jump from one galaxy to another.

Each stargate knows its destination solar system, but nothing about server addresses. Since these addresses can change, or servers can be down temporarily, the master server is responsible for connecting you to your desired destination. If it cannot find a suitable server, the jump is refused, and the corresponding galaxy is not reachable via stargates.

The program features dazzlingly fast network game action in a 360-degree environment, hardware rendering on 3Dfx Voodoo graphics and OpenGL accelerators, a digital fast-paced soundtrack, particle special effects and weapons, a full panoramic outer-space background, a semi-transparent command console to configure and tweak various settings, and customizable game play variables.
