Populus - population biology and evolutionary ecology

The Populus software contains a set of simulations that we use to teach population biology and evolutionary ecology at the University of Minnesota. Simulation models may be chosen from a menu, and students can move among the parameter boxes of an input window, changing initial defaults to values of their own choosing. Most modules offer several graphical outputs of model dynamics, and their computational algorithms are detailed in an Acrobat-based help system packaged with the program.

Thoughts on the Name

Since it is not so long ago that I first heard the name “Populus,” I can still recall with some vividness the initial impression made upon me by that excellent name. One is, of course, immediately struck by the echo of, or reference to, the highly-acclaimed computer program Senatus Populusque Romanus (that series of simulations of Roman Law by the eminent student of jurisprudence Bodin Faunce Pardew), while at the same time “Populus” also has a casually disarming air of being, perhaps corrupted from the English word “populous.” Later, as one first tries to use Populus, the thought is temporarily unavoidable that it was so named in memory of the practice of punishing errant students with a poplar switch (Populus spp.), or perhaps in relation to the Latin verb “populare,” to devastate or ruin.

Eventually, however, with practice, and along the way, some good-natured ribbing from fellow students’ indecent puns about being “caught in populo” – (in Populo flagrante!) – one at last develops the feeling that Populus is equally capable of connoting a “popular” exercise even more than a devastating one.

Populus for Windows

Populus has been tested on Windows XP (not recommended), Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10. Please ensure .jar files are associated with the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). For more information on how to do this, please see this page. You may also need to re-install Java if the .jar file association does not work.

If you continue to have problems (especially in Windows 10), you can also attempt to run Populus through Command Prompt/Command Line. You will want to use the cd command (change directory) to navigate to the folder where you downloaded the Populus software. This could be Downloads or My Documents. Once you are in the correct folder in Command Line, you will want to enter this command: java -jar PopulusAll.jar If you are in the correct folder, this should open the application.

Populus for Mac OS X

Mac OS X 10.8, 10.9, or 10.10 users may get the error "App can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer” in order to bypass this error you will need to right-click (or control-click) PopulusAll.jar and click Open and then Open again at the popup box. You may also open System Preferences and choose Security and Privacy. Under the General Tab, adjust the radio button under 'Allow apps downloaded from:' to be 'Anywhere.'
