Kate's Video Converter is a program that allows you to encode video files of several formats (e.g. AVI, MPG, ASF, MOV, MP4, FLV) to the AVI, MPEG, WMV, MOV, DVD, VCD or SVCD extension.

Plain user interface

The interface of the application is plain and simple. You can open a video by using the file browser only, since the "drag and drop" method is not supported (and neither is batch processing).So, you can specify the output format and location, and proceed with the conversion process.But you can also configure audio and video settings when it comes to the bit rate, frame rate, sample frequency rate, resize, compressor, channels, and others.

Built-in media player

Furthermore, you can preview the source video in a built-in media player, set the default output directory and enable Kate's Video Converter to open the clip when the task is completed, restore settings to their default values, and more.The program takes up a moderate amount of system resources, doesn't have any user documentation and takes a reasonable amount of time to finish a task, in most cases. The image and sound quality in the output files is very good.

Minor issues

However, we have experienced some instability issues during our tests. For instance, Kate's Video Converter froze when we attempted to preview a video (we were forced to restart the application) and did this again right after finishing an AVI-to-MPEG conversion (we didn't manage to open the video). Also, a watermark is displayed on the output files.

Bottom line

All in all, Kate's Video Converter is a pretty good program for video conversion, if you don't mind the occasional glitches. Nevertheless, you can test the tool for yourself and see if it's more compliant with your computer.
