It is a masterpiece of imagination and colour printing. Richard Doyle was one of the most inventive of all fairy illustrators, as his sketchbooks and watercolours show. The full page plates present scenes of small fairies inhabiting the floor of the forest, under flowers, mushrooms, and leaves.
