If you need to know which values are written to a binary file, you can use Witched to visualize the values of a selection of bytes.

Witched features include: a quick view option that enables you to inspect some bytes of a binary file; a base conversion utility; the ability to set a default working directory; the ability to make a list of file filters for the file open dialog box; and multiple display options. Witched also provides an easy interface to change file associations or can be set as the default file viewer for unknown files.
