In depth
A closer look at IBM Internet Connection Phone
IBM modified the GSM compression/decompression (codec) algorithm (the European cellular telephony standard) in order to suppress echos and to control the loss of packets. This new algorithm compresses 8-Khz 16 bit voice samples to 9400 bits per second, leading to clear, near echoless conversations. IBM's phone features the ability to call back previous callers, a selection of servers to choose from, adjustable voice quality and adjustable microphone quality.
