In Challenge Fishing 2000, two fishermen, the Champ (the computer) and the Challenger (you) compete in a fishing match at one of nine fishing scenes (three warmwater, three coldwater, and three saltwater). The two take turns fishing a selected scene and score points for the fish they catch. The Champ does his fishing automatically, while the Challenger watches, and the Challenger does his fishing using the game controls.

Since the Champ knows many of the secrets of these nine fishing locations, you, the Challenger, are best advised to observe and do what the Champ does, that is, use the same bait, fish the same locations in a scene, fish the same depth, and cast the same distance. Sometimes it won't be obvious what the Champ is doing, but there will be hints to help you narrow down the possibilities. In the end the fisherman with the most points wins the match.
