is a powerful server that provides automatic TCP/IP configuration of client machines on a local network.
The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server automatically provides networked computers with the required TCP/IP configuration from one central location. This virtually eliminates the need to set up computers individually.
When a computer requires the use of TCP/IP network resources, it broadcasts a request for address information. The DHCP Server responds to this, assigns a new address and sends it to the computer together with other required configuration for the network. This information is acknowledged by the computer, and used to set up its configuration. This procedure is automatic, entirely transparent to the end user, and takes only an instant.
Once a computer has finished using the network, the configuration is made available to another computer, thus conserving addresses.
When a mobile user plugs their laptop into the network, it automatically receives the right configuration. There is no need to manually enter any TCP/IP configuration information.
