In depth

A closer look at Sanskrit Dictionary

Sanskrit Dictionary is nothing more than its name states, namely a dictionary for the Sanskrit language. Based on an extensive Access database of words, it enables you to translate Sanskrit words to English. The application requires the Arial Unicode MS font to be installed on your system, so that you can type in Sanskrit characters. Provided this requirement is met, you can start using the program to perform text or word translations.Simplicity is the defining characetristic of the interface, which provides three modes to input the word you want to search equivalents for. The easiest one is to type in its transliteration without diacritics, which allows you to write a word exactly as it is heard.Sanskrit Dictionary searches for database records that might match the input and displays them in the right side of the main window. Selecting an item displays its corresponding Sanskrit word (written in the Devanagari script), along with details about its grammatical properties, the English translation and explanation. The same goes for transliterations you enter with diacritics.Alternatively, the input word can be typed in using the native Sanskrit script. The program provides a pop-up symbol pane that allows you to select the character to enter in the search box.Double-clicking on a box immediately erases the current word, making room for performing another database query.Sanskrit Dictionary bundles a rich thesaurus and a user-friendly interface to find words and read explanations and translations. It is very easy to use and can prove useful to those who plan on learning this language on their own.
