GroupCalendar can be used without, or with, a Exchange server. The latter provides a real time overview of all co-worker appointments in one public calendar folder. If no Exchange server is used, all appointments are stored in a database and periodically synchronized with a sub-folder of the default Outlook calendar.Each user can be given one or more department names that are written into the appointments in the 'GC' folder. Standard Outlook 'view' functionality can be used to create filters and views to switch between different groups, (department names) or even single users in the same folder. This filter functionality makes it possible to use the same one GroupCalendar folder for the booking of resources like cars and conference rooms
