It is a hardcore shooter at heart but has been made easier and more accessible for novices to enjoy also. (mouse control, easy mode etc). Use of a proper arcade joystick like hotrod or x-arcade is highly recommended. The defender-like mechanic of protecting humans and rescuing them right from the hands of the abductors dramaticises the gameplay experience.
