In depth

A closer look at Vitals

vitals assists in determining the integrity of data in the given file(s), or the standard input in the absence of any arguments, by computing various vital statistics. The statistics include a four digit hex CRC, a 16-bit byte sum (similar to sum(1) without the block count) and line, word, and character counts (similar to wc(1)). One line is printed for each input file or the standard input, consisting of five statistics fields followed by the file name, if known. Written at Hewlett Packard, and released to the Public Domain.
