Online uses TCP/IP ICMP (ping) to monitor all the computers and devices on your LAN.
The program asks TCP/IP for a station's IP address and then attempts to contact that station. Online then reports whether that station is up and running or off line.
Ping is a low priority TCP/IP protocol. A station may ignore a ping request if it is very busy. To account for circumstances like this, Online allows you to specify how many times to ping a station before reporting that it has failed.
