You2Mat is a free YouTube to MP4 converter. Paste a video link and download it in MP4 at up to 1080p, or take the audio as MP3 - online, no registration, nothing to install.
You2Mat YouTube Video Converter
You2Mat turns a YouTube link into a file you can keep. Paste the URL, click Convert, then pick your format and quality on the download page. No account, no software, no technical knowledge needed.
It runs in your browser, so it works the same on a laptop, a tablet or an Android phone. If you have typed
you2mate or
you2mat3, those are just other ways people write the same name and they all lead here.
MP4 is the default output for a practical reason: it is the most widely supported video container there is. Phones, tablets, computers, smart TVs, games consoles and editing software all read it without extra codecs.

Choosing a Resolution
Higher is not automatically better. Resolution interacts with the screen you will watch on, the storage the file has to fit into, and the connection it travels over.
As a rough guide for a five-minute video:
-
1080p - around 150 MB. Right for a laptop, a TV, or anything you intend to keep.
-
720p - around 75 MB. The best all-round compromise for most people.
-
360p - around 30 MB. Sensible when storage or mobile data is limited.
-
240p and 144p - very small, for slow connections where the alternative is nothing at all.
On a phone screen the visible difference between 480p and 1080p is far smaller than the three-fold difference in file size.
One ceiling worth knowing: a converter cannot create detail that is not in the source. If a video was uploaded at 720p, asking for 1080p produces a larger file containing exactly the same picture.
MP4 or MP3?
An MP4 file contains both a video and an audio track. An MP3 contains only audio - converting to MP3 works by stripping the video away, which is why the file ends up roughly a tenth of the size.
Take the
MP4 when the picture matters. Take the
MP3 when you only intend to listen: besides the size saving, audio playback lets your phone screen sleep, which uses noticeably less battery on a long journey.
For MP3 bitrate: 320 kbps for music worth keeping, 192 kbps for general listening, 128 kbps for anything speech-led. Going above 320 kbps does not help, because the source audio is already compressed.
What Is an MP4 File?
MP4 is a container format for MPEG-4. It holds video, audio and text such as subtitles in a single file. The video inside is usually encoded with H.264, which desktop players, phones and every modern browser handle without extra software.
That combination - one file, universal support - is why MP4 became the default for video on the web, and why it is the safe choice unless you have a specific reason to want something else.
MPEG-4 and MP4 Are Not the Same Thing
This trips people up regularly, and the distinction is straightforward once stated.
MPEG-4 is a set of standards for compressing audio and video - a method, not a file. It is divided into parts: MPEG-4 Part 2, Part 10 (better known as H.264), Part 14, and others.
MP4 is MPEG-4 Part 14 specifically: the container format that stores the compressed video, audio, subtitles and images together. Its usual extension is .mp4, though related extensions exist - .m4v for video, .m4a for audio only, .m4p for protected content.
In short: MPEG-4 describes how the data is compressed; MP4 describes how it is packaged.
MPG and MP4 Compared
| Comparison parameter |
MPG | MP4 |
| File extension | .mpg, .mpeg, others | .mp4 |
| Video coding formats | MPEG-1, MPEG-2 | MPEG-4, H.264, H.265, others |
| Audio coding formats | MP2, MP3 | MP3, AAC, AC-3, others |
| Streaming | Yes | Yes |
| Chapters | No | Yes |
| Typical file size | Larger | Smaller at equal quality |
MPG uses older MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 coding, which produces noticeably larger files for the same picture quality. Unless you need MPG for an older device or legacy software, choose MP4.
Where Your Downloads Go
Android - almost always the Downloads folder, reachable through any file manager or your browser's download list.
iPhone and iPad - Safari saves to the Files app under Downloads, not into Photos. Video files can be moved into Photos manually if you want them in your camera roll. This is standard iOS behaviour.
Windows, macOS and Linux - your browser's Downloads folder.
Downloaded files stay on your device permanently. The tool works in any modern browser - Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and Opera - and the resulting MP4 plays on Android phones, iPhone, iPad, computers and most smart TVs.
One limitation: videos longer than about two hours are not supported. The cap keeps any single conversion down to a couple of minutes.
Converting a Downloaded MP4 to MP3 Yourself
If you already have an MP4 on your computer and want just the audio, VLC does this for free and without installing anything extra:
- Open VLC Media Player
- Click the
Media menu
- Choose
Convert / Save
- Click
Add and select your MP4 file
- Click the
Convert / Save button
- Under Profile, select
Audio - MP3
- Set the destination filename, making sure it ends in .mp3
- Click
Start and wait for the conversion to finish
VLC is free, open source, and available for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is also the most reliable way to play a file that other players refuse to open.
If Something Does Not Work
"That does not look like a YouTube link" - the pasted text is not a complete video address. Copy the full URL from your browser's address bar, or use the Share button in the YouTube app and choose Copy link.
Nothing happens when you click Convert - usually a script blocker or privacy extension. Allow scripts for this page, or try a different browser.
The download stops partway - typically an interrupted connection, common on mobile data. Delete the partial file before retrying, because some browsers resume into the same broken file and produce the same result again.
The file will not play - check the size first against the guide above; anything far smaller than expected did not finish, even if it looks complete in a folder listing. If the size looks right but your player refuses it, the cause is usually the codec inside the container. MP4 files normally hold H.264, which every device made in the last decade handles, but occasionally you will meet H.265 (HEVC), which is not supported everywhere. VLC plays essentially every format and is the fastest way to tell whether the problem is the file or the player.
It is taking a long time - source length is the biggest factor, followed by server load, which peaks during US and European evenings.
Why Convert to MP4?
-
Editing software compatibility. Many video editors do not accept every format, so converting to MP4 first avoids the problem entirely.
-
Transferring to a phone. Android and iPhone both handle MP4 natively. An AVI or MOV file often needs converting before it will play on an iPhone.
-
A consistent library. Keeping everything in one format makes files easier to organise, play and move between devices.
Is You2Mat Safe?
A converter should be judged on what it asks of you. This page asks for a video link and nothing else - no email, no account, no browser extension, and no program to install.
The genuine risks with converter sites follow a recognisable pattern:
-
A notification permission prompt on arrival. No converter has a legitimate reason to send push notifications.
-
Several download buttons where only one is real.
-
"Install our app or extension for faster downloads." Extensions can read everything you do in your browser.
-
An .exe or .apk file when you asked for .mp4. Always check the extension before opening anything.
-
A "codec required" prompt. Modern browsers play MP4 natively.
Legal Use
Download content you own, have explicit permission to use, or that is published under a licence permitting download. Public-domain material and Creative Commons content are fine - YouTube marks Creative Commons licensing in the video description.
Downloading copyrighted video without permission is a violation in most countries regardless of which tool is used.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is You2Mat?
You2Mat is a free online converter that turns permitted YouTube links into MP4 video or MP3 audio files. It runs in your browser with nothing to install.
Is You2Mat the same as you2mate or you2mat3?
Yes. Those are common ways people type the same thing, and all of them land on this page.
Does You2Mat work with youtu.be and Shorts links?
Yes. Standard watch links, youtu.be short links and /shorts/ URLs are all accepted, including links copied from the YouTube app's Share button.
Which resolution should I choose?
720p is the best all-round compromise. Choose 1080p for a laptop or TV, and 360p or lower when storage or mobile data is limited.
Can You2Mat extract just the audio?
Yes. Choose an MP3 option on the download page and you get the audio without the video track, at roughly a tenth of the file size.
What is the difference between MPEG-4 and MP4?
MPEG-4 is a set of compression standards; MP4 is MPEG-4 Part 14, the container format that packages the compressed video and audio into a single file.
Is there a length limit?
Yes, around two hours, so that no single conversion takes more than a couple of minutes.
Is it legal to use You2Mat?
Only download content you own, have permission to use, or that is freely available for download.

Converting, compressing or trimming files already on your computer -
HandBrake is free, open source, and runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
-
Converting your own video files to MP3 -
Video2MP3 Converter works from files on your device rather than from a link.
